CDF GENERAL KAHARIRI CHAIRS 15TH KENYA SHIPYARDS LIMITED BOARD MEETING

The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Muriu Kahariri, chaired the 15th Board of Directors Meeting of Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) on 20th June 2025 at Mombasa Shipyard.

The meeting aimed at evaluating the ongoing construction, repair and maintenance of ships, locomotives rehabilitation and civil works projects, and celebration of the Company’s recent attainment of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification on management systems.

Present during the meeting were Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General John Omenda, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus, Commander Kenya Air Force Major General Fatuma Ahmed, Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno, Director General Defence National Security Industries (DNSI) Major General Bernard Waliaula, Managing Director Kenya Shipyards Limited Major General Said Farah, PS Defence representative Isaac Masinde, PS Industries representative Mr. Ernest Lakayu, PS National Treasury Representative Mr. Mark Ngechu, PS Maritime Representative Mr. Gideon Mwangi, Ms. Maryanne Karanja (Independent Director) and Mr. Simon Mwachia (Independent Director)

General Kahariri was officially presented with the ISO certificate, a symbol of KSL’s commitment to quality, safety, and operational excellence.

During the session, the Managing Director Major General Said Farah highlighted KSL’s strategic importance in supporting the operational readiness of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Ministries Departments and Agencies and private sector in enhancing national security and contributing to the country’s economic development. He further emphasized KSL’s pivotal role in advancing the government’s Blue Economy agenda and strengthening regional maritime capabilities. The BOD was also taken on a guided tour of ongoing projects at the Mombasa Shipyard, which includes vessel maintenance, repairs and overhaul.

The CDF underscored the government’s continued support for revitalizing the maritime sector and reaffirmed the vision of positioning Kenya Shipyards Limited as a regional hub for shipbuilding and marine engineering.

KSL established as a State Corporation under the Ministry of Defence is fast emerging as a hub for shipbuilding in the East African region and remains committed to driving innovation, generating employment, and contributing to Kenya’s ambition of becoming a self-reliant, industrialized maritime nation.
