The Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) summit, made up of fourteen (14) Counties, could not have come at a better time when discussions around sustainable exploitation of the Blue Ecosystem have increased across the globe. Buoyed by an understanding of the strategic connections between Counties with shared interests and a desire to mutually benefit, LREB is one of the six blocs formulated to spur sustainable economic growth through policy harmonization and resource mobilization in Kenya. Convened annually, the 12th Summit took place under the auspices of the County Government of Busia, and themed “Food Security in the Face of Climate Change: Building Partnerships towards Resilience among Communities in the LREB” The 12th Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Summit was held at Alupe University in Busia County. The Summit was graced by the Chairman LREB, Governor of Kisumu County H.E Prof Anyang Nyongo, Governor of Bungoma County H.E Kenneth Lusaka, Governor of Kakamega County H.E Fernandes Barasa, Governor of Siaya County H.E James Orengo, Governor of Bomet County H.E Hillary Barchok, Governor of Vihiga County H.E Wilber Otichilo, Governor of Nyamira County H.E Amos Nyaribo and the host Governor of Busia County H.E Paul Otuoma.Representatives from the academia, investors, institutional leaders, county governments and national governments representatives, private sector players and development partners met at the summit to exchange ideas, learn from experts, and explore opportunities for collaboration.Kenya Shipyards Limited team led by GM Production, Col Peter Muthungu shed light on its mission, vision, mandate, products and services through plenary discussions and through an exhibition booth.Kenya Shipyards Limited is cognizant of the reality that the Lake Region is strategically placed in close proximity to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, and its mandate in the promotion of intermodal transport and cross-border maritime communications through provision of maritime transport, shipping and maritime infrastructural capabilities will ease entrance into these countries’ markets. Further, the Lake Region has access to transportation and navigation routes into the COMESA and SADC regions and Kenya is a signatory to the African Continental Free Trade Area, (AfCFTA), one of the flagship projects of the African Union Agenda 2063 to create a single continental market of 55 Member States of the African Union and eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs). In response to the theme on climate change and food security, KSL was able to showcase its Glass Reinforced Plastic boat production line, which is ecofriendly, seaworthy, cost efficient, anticorrosive, with a longer lifespan of 20 to 30 years and promotes environmental conservation efforts through substitution of wood for alternative composite materials. This is all in an effort to meet Kenya’s commitment made in the Nairobi Climate Summit of a 24% reduction of emissions by 2025, 51% reduction by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. KSL further highlighted its efforts in integrating energy efficient technologies and innovations in boat and ships constructed and repaired.To spearhead homegrown solutions, KSL continues to take advantage of the AfCFTA to implement its mandate to provide ships, artisanal crafts, ferries, barges, floating hotels, tugs, patrol boats, search and rescue boats, water ambulances, pilot boats and special vessels like training and research vessels. Blue Economy areas such as fisheries and aquaculture, maritime transport and shipping, extractive resources, marine renewable energy, Western Kenya tourism circuit and maritime security will be positively impacted. KSL is open to collaborations, partnerships, and business engagements with public and private stakeholders. This is sure to not only exploit the inland waters, the expansive coastline and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) but also the international waters around the globe.
