World Fisheries Day stands as a beacon rallying for the need for sustainable fisheries management, the elimination of illegal and unregulated fishing, and the protection of human rights for small-scale fishing communities. Themed “Collaborative Governance for Blue Transformation and Sustainable Investments in Fisheries”, 21 November is the World Fisheries Day, celebrated across the world annually. The day was marked with various events from water sports to conferences and speeches to highlight the importance of the world’s fisheries and sustainable fishing practices.
Commemorated in Siaya County for the first time in Kenya, World Fisheries Day attracted the Deputy Chief of Staff, Eliud Owalo, Governor H.E James Orengo, the PS Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Betsy Njagi, and the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr Otiende Amolo among other dignitaries. This was an occasion to spotlight Siaya County’s significant role in the blue economy and its broader economic potential to the national development agenda. Representatives from the national government, ministries, departments and agencies, Banks, County officials, private sector representatives, residents of Siaya County, and the fisherfolk joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Fisheries Day in Luanda Kotieno, South Uyoma Ward, Rarieda Subcounty.
Kenya Shipyards Limited attended the World Fisheries Day commemoration in Luanda K’otieno to demonstrate its capabilities in making the vision of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries a reality. KSL is playing a pivotal role in providing ships, boats and maritime infrastructure capabilities for fisheries which provide food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. KSL has further adopted climate and environment-friendly manufacturing practices, as well as technological innovations in production of its Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) boats which are critical building blocks for Blue Ecoomy Transformation.
In conclusion, World Fisheries Day serves as a reminder to prioritize responsible practices to ensure the well-being of aquatic ecosystems and support the contribution of fisheries to the nourishment of communities across the globe.
