INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Kenya Shipyards Limited joined women all over the globe to collectively commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day. Themed “Accelerate Action” we got to celebrate women in their diversity, the progress made, having men as allies and remember how much further there is to go as an enabler of business performance and corporate sustainability.

#IWD2025 started on a high note with an address from the Managing Director Maj Gen Farah who echoed on the intentional inclusion of women in all areas of KSL. This served as a reminder that KSL being in a high priority strategic sector and mandated to undertake shipbuilding, maintenance, repairs, civil maritime works and heavy engineering calls for personnel with skills of various trades.

Central to this year’s theme, KSL has progressively engaged over 1,954 employees three quarters of whom are youths, particularly young women hence forging women’s economic participation. Domiciled in a male dominated manufacturing sector where women are underrepresented, and face unique challenges, KSL has stood out by equipping and nurturing creativity from female employees across various professional disciplines in Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa who concurrently pursue continuous professional developments. To inspire inclusion, KSL Board governance structure and management has also mainstreamed women in leadership and decision-making roles as a welcome amplification of women’s voices through representation.

To reaffirm KSL’s commitment to collective action and shared ownership of “Accelerate Action” women employees hold key supervisory roles, administrative roles, security, procurement, civil engineering, occupational safety and health, plant operations, project management and foreladies showing that excellence knows no gender and individuals are empowered to reach their full potential.

In commemoration of #IWD 2025, KSL facilities in Mombasa, Nairobi, and Kisumu hosted women to a special luncheon, virtual videoconferencing with other branches and received gift hampers. Led by the General Manager of Supply Chain Management Ms Mercy Marindich, discussions were around career pursuits, overcoming bias, self-care, wellness, diversity, and inclusion among others.. In solidarity, lets “Accelerate Action” for women everywhere, Happy International Women’s Day 2025.
